Además, estaba relacionado con actividades empresariales del sector esmeraldero de la región.
La Unidad Investigativa de El Tiempo señalaron que Castro Castellanos y algunos de sus allegados eran aparentemente cercanos al denominado clan Rincón, relacionado con los esmeralderos Horacio Triana Romero y Gilberto Rincón, extraditados a Estados Unidos.
Militó en el Partido Liberal y así consolidando paralelamente una relación muy cercana con los círculos de poder del sector esmeraldero.
